It seems that every day we are bombarded with new “food rules” on what to eat, and what not to eat. It can become overwhelming trying to sift through all of the conflicting information that is out there regarding nutrition and food choice.
As I follow all the research throughout the years, what I have noticed is that every decade the information from the decade before is disproven to a degree, and a new “food rule” or trend begins. The cycle goes on and on. Why is that? You would think they would have figured it out by now, right?
Well, the human body is extremely complex. It is impossible to control all the variables to come up with a definitive answer, and there are things at play inside the human body that scientist haven’t completely figured out yet. Then add in that we are all biologically a little different, and you can see how it becomes difficult to be exact. In the meantime, they do the best they can.
Here is what I have learned. Most scientist agree that vegetables, fruits, and water are important components to health. We also need protein, fats, and carbohydrates. Now, to what degree depends on what group you talk to. Most scientist also acknowledge that heavily processed foods , chemical additives, and sugar does harm to the body. This information is a good place to start.
Mark Hyman is a part of the Cleveland Clinic where they are researching food as medicine, and trying to shift the tides of the medical community to more prevention of disease instead of trying to repair the body with medication and other band-aids after it is severely broken. His website is a great source of useful FREE information.
If you are reading this and want to do something nourishing for your body, but are a bit unsure of where to begin, well, try adding some vegetables to each of your main meals. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, and it doesn’t have to be a lot. Just find a starting place, and begin adding them in a little a time. If you are feeling ambitious, add in some additional water to your day as well.
It is never too late to begin taking care of your body, and give it the nourishment that it needs to function properly. There is no better day than today! Start now.
